Simon, Jackie & Mathias

Gosh, Autumn seems like it was here and gone in a flash doesn’t it. Simon and Jackie were after an outdoor Autumnal photoshoot with their super cute little boy Mathias in time for Christmas.  The dark nights were drawing in fast, and with so few light hours left in a day, and the temperatures dropping, I was worried for a while there that we may not achieve our shoot before Winter was upon us.

Simon runs the ever popular FitMK (http://www.fitmk.com/), the original outdoor gym in Milton Keynes that offers a mixture of ways to train.  I’ve been attending FitMK sessions for the last 18 months or so, mostly doing bootcamps and my personal favourite class, Metabolic Effect. Anyone who meets Simon can’t help but be carried along by his enthusiasm for life, health, fitness and the great outdoors.

I was chuffed when Simon approached me at the end of a session to enquire about a family shoot. Knackered and looking shabby, covered in mud, and barely got my breath back, waiting for those precious endorphins to kick in, I just about managed to give him some details to make the booking.

Simon spoke to me about the photos he and Jackie have from their wedding in Canada a few years earlier.  They had the traditional ones taken indoors on the actual wedding day, but it wasn’t until the day after when they went outside, that they got some of their favourite images.  Those amazing Canadian backdrops with some super fresh snow, Simon spoke of how much he enjoyed the experience.  It makes sense that a guy who spends a fair chunk of his time outdoors, with his business being centred around getting active in the fresh air, would be well suited to an outdoor shoot.

Fastforward a couple of years and Jackie and Simon are now parents to the fabulous Mathias. Clearly a proud daddy, I’d heard so much about this little man already and felt really lucky to finally meet him.

We struck lucky on the weather, the sky was blue and clear with the sun shining bright in the sky.  I tend to allow a bit of extra time when shooting families with children in case feeding times, nappy changes or cuddles are needed, but Mathias was on top form.  Such a character, he pulled some cute facial expressions that had me seriously giggling when I was editing the images in the middle of the night.  And those blue eyes…. wow!

I totally love shooting outdoors in natural light, no two spots are the same and the light cannot be replicated.  Something about being outside and not stuck in one spot gives the photo shoot a relaxed and informal feel which means the time just flies by.  I enjoyed getting the opportunity to find out more about Jackie and her family.  It turns out we worked for the same company for a few years so there was lots for us to natter about.  A small world 🙂

Thank you for a lovely morning in the sunshine guys 🙂

Melody’s Birthday Celebrations

I met Melody while she was planning her big birthday bash.  You only turn 25 once and it is a great milestone to celebrate.  For this special event, Melody’s boyfriend had designed her a stunning pink and gold African outfit as a special gift to her, while all the other guests arrived in white and gold to compliment the scheme. Melody had made cupcakes, her boyfriend had created some special punch in personalised bottles for Melody.  The apartment was decorated, there was a makeup artist and DJ on hand alongside a chocolate fountain and a huge spread of mouthwatering home cooked food which made this a memorable party. Amongst the guests of friends and family was Melody’s little niece.  The cutest of little 4 year olds who also happened to have her birthday on the same day as Melody’s.  Such a great little dancer, it made sense then that she should be able to come and party with the big kids! The celebrations were a great hit and at the time in the evening when other parties might be coming to an end, Melody and her friends headed off to London on a privately hired coach to party until the small hours. Happy Birthday Melody xx

Finley & Maggie – A Cute Couple With A Difference

When you photograph any couple, you get to see a connection.  The way they share each other’s personal space, how they look at each other when they are together, the trust they place in each other.  Its difficult to say what that little spark between two companions actually is, but it something very special, and unmistakable when you see it.  My job is to get it in the frame!

Finley and Maggie were no different in their relationship.  Finley’s mum asked me to take some photos of her son with his best friend Maggie as a Christmas present for him. The two spend so much time together, and it recently occurred to Finley they he didn’t have a single photo of himself with his beloved four legged friend.  Time to put that right!

The photoshoot was a lot of fun all round. I love shooting outdoors in all seasons but Autumn brings a certain beauty with the low sun and orange leaves on the ground.  The fresh and open spaces allowed Finley to be himself and interact with Maggie in a natural way that had no limits.  It was great exercise for myself too, as I tried to keep up with the pace of an 11 year old boy and a dog that was full of beans.   Finley’s zest for fun and adventure had me in stitches many time during our time together.  Such a character.

I enjoyed this shoot so much that I began considering getting a dog of my own, until my husband reminded me that soon I will have my own 11 year old to contend with.  Maybe I’ll see how that goes first!

Sarah and David

Sarah and David initially planned to get married earlier in the year in Edinburgh.  I’d really wanted to capture their day so it was a shame to realise that if I took it on, I would not have made it back for another wedding the following morning in Northamptonshire.  I can’t say I wasn’t a tiny bit gutted but as fate would have it, Sarah and David ended up changing the location for their special day and it all fell beautifully into my diary 😉

Sarah made quite an entrance when she arrived in an immaculate navy blue Subaru which tied in perfectly with their colour scheme of navy blue, baby blue, dusty pink and white.

David & Sarah had a lovely service and I could see from the amount of tissues being passed around that this wedding meant a great deal to the friends and family who attended.  For some of the younger guests, this was their first experience of a wedding and I was touched to see that they too, were moved by the service.

Newport Pagnell was the location for David and Sarah’s wedding reception.  The couple had decorated the room and put on a huge display of food.  Sarah had made the most amazing 4 tier cake with each layer a different colour AND flavour.  I got to try a piece (for research purposes of course!) and can say it was delicious.  I wasn’t the only one who ended up trying more than one of the flavours.

The evening got lively as Sarah swapped her heels and wedding dress for some funky white flats and a classic little white dress.  The kids certainly gave the adults a good run for their money on the dance floor.  For some so young, I can’t believe how well behaved the children were all day and late into the evening.  A real credit to Sarah, David and their family.

Thanks for having me xx

Jemma and Chris

One of my favourite events to photograph are weddings.  You get to spend such a lot of time with the couple and their family that you quickly build up a rapport with them and begin to feel relaxed in each others company.  There is something very special about covering all aspects of the day, the journey from PJs to Princess to Party.  I feel pleased that I am collecting images that they will enjoy for a long time after their wedding day is over.

Jemma & Chris’ wedding was at The Parkside Hotel in Woughton on the Green.  After being promised massive rainstorms all week I’d hatched a ‘Wet Plan’ for the photos.  Jemma’s bridesmaid’s prayers must have been answered because it turned out to be a glorious sunny day and we were able to get outside for some shots in the pretty surroundings.

Although it was a 2pm service, Jemma began her bridal preparations at 9am.  This meant I was able to get a lot of images of her getting ready before dashing off to Chris’ parents’ house to capture him completing all those finishing touches.  It is such a privilege to be able to show a bride and groom the ‘other side’ of how the morning carried out before they were reunited at the service.

Jemma and Chris had called in a lot of skills from their friends and family to make their day very personal to them.  From the funky flat shoes, the cake, the hairstyling, to the table centres, it was clear that a lot of effort had been put in to make a day that was uniquely theirs.

The couple decided they didn’t want to open the dance floor with a slow dance so Jemma quickly got things started Gangnam Style.

Ruby’s Christening

After my lovely morning with Ruby a couple of weeks earlier, I came along to capture her special day. After initial concerns that Ruby might not be able to squeeze into the Christening dress, thankfully it turned out to be a perfect fit and she looked super cute.
Clearly Ruby is a very popular and cherished little girl as she had been gifted not one, but THREE Christening cakes!

The Christening took place in a beautiful 2 tier church in Stewkley with lots of her friends and family around her. Zoe and Adam had gone to great lengths to add lots of little special details to help celebrate her day and her two big brothers were there looking out for her at the party afterwards.

A lovely do, that left me with a smile on my face for the rest of the day. Thanks for having me guys xx

Notting Hill Carnival

I like coming to London so see all the sights, but I mostly enjoy capturing the scenes and people on the streets.  In the past I have gone there with the intention of taking some images and then not braving getting my beloved camera out of my bag through fear or losing or damaging it.  Silly, I guess.

This year I’ve invested in a different camera strap.  There are various types of these, mine is called a “Quick Rapid” I think, and it enables me to wear my camera like a handbag, so when I’m not snapping, it just conveniently hangs there, on my side.  I always keep the lens hood on the end to prevent any damage to the end of my lens as I brush through crowds.

The benefit of all this of course is that it keeps my hands free to have a firm grip on the kids while we jostle on and off the tubes!  Every year we say we want to go to Notting Hill Carnival but there has never been a perfect time.  Either the weather wasn’t right, perhaps we were on holiday or our kids were just too young and still in buggies or the midst of potty training.  I  have fond memories of going to Carnival with my dad when I was younger.  All the bright colours, the elaborate costumes and grand oversized floats, the hypnotising rhythms and the general party party atmosphere. This year, we really wanted to go for it…. So we did and it did not disappoint!

Beautiful Ruby’s Baby Shoot

I’ve known Zoe for years so when she booked me to take some pictures of Ruby, I was delighted.  Ruby is an absolute dream and I fell in love with her instantly.  What a charmer!  Our morning together was very relaxed and Ruby allowed us to try lots of different shots.  Right on cue, she even managed a cheeky nap so we could get some lovely ones of her feet while they were still.

A valuable and rewarding morning has left me feeling a little bit broody, and I have been told I am not alone in this.  Ruby seems to have a lot of fans.

Thanks Zoe xx
